Water Heater Energy-Saving Tips for MA Homeowners

Your water heater doesn’t get any days off. This appliance works overtime to supply us with the comfort and convenience we need, whether it’s for hot showers, sanitizing dishes, laundering our clothes, or cleaning our homes. But there is a way to give your water heater a break. If you plan on heading out of town on your own summer vacation, these tips may help you save energy and potentially lower your summer water bills:

  • Turn off your main water supply:

If you plan on leaving home for an extended time, such as staying at your summer home or taking a long getaway, it is recommended to switch off your main water supply. This can help avoid potential leaks, water damage, and save on energy costs and added worry while you’re away.

  • Switch your water heater to a “vacation setting”:

Do this by locating the temperature dial on your water heater and switching it to “VAC” or “VACATION.” It is not recommended to turn off your water heater, even when away for extended periods of time.

  • Lower the temperature on your water heater:

If you don’t notice a vacation setting on your system, simply lower the temperature to 50-60 degrees. Doing so can still help you save money on water heating costs without needing to switch off your water heater altogether, which could cause issues upon your return.

Is It Time to Upgrade Your Water Heater?

With the extra time on our hands this summer, now is a great time to tackle any home projects that have been on the back burner – including replacing your old water heater. If your water heater is over 8 years old, your system may already be experiencing some of the negative consequences of its aging parts and constant use in your Massachusetts home. If you’ve noticed higher energy bills, an inefficient water heater could be the culprit. Plus, old systems could fail without any warning.

When a water heater fails, the tank containing the water it is heating usually ruptures, causing damage and loss of service. If your aging water heating equipment is causing a damper on your carefree summer mood, now is the perfect time to consider an upgrade and help avoid unexpected malfunctions in the future. Not to mention, a new system will also operate more efficiently, using less fuel and lowering your year-round energy costs.
